Le Cinque Terre
The Cinque Terre occupy a 12 km stretch of Ligurian coast. including a few km north of La Spezia and a few km south of Levanto. The five villages formerly called terre are: Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso. The Cinque Terre did not start out as fishing villages but as farmers' villages. For this reason, the populations immediately took care of terracing the mountain areas. Over time the population learned to know the sea and to take advantage of it both from the point of view of transport and that of fishing. In 1997 they were included among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, in order to maintain these villages as nature created them
The village of Riomaggiore is located between 2 steep hills that descend towards the sea, the peculiarity are the colorful houses built vertically.
The village of Manarola is perched on a steep promontory of dark rock. Manarola is also characterized by the presence of the typical Genoese tower-houses.
The village of Corniglia differs from the others for its elevated position with respect to the sea is in fact located on a promontory a hundred meters high and surrounded by vineyards
The village of Vernazza is the only natural port of the Cinque Terre, it develops along the now covered Vernazzola stream
The village of Monterosso is located on the hill of San Cristoforo, which separates the town in two. On the one hand the ancient village, on the other the new village with the largest beach in the Cinque Terre
